The Masters of Ceremony
A year and a half ago, I opened a Lebanese eatery called Makan with my Mom and my sister. They are in charge of everything that goes on in the kitchen and I take care of the rest! My favorite instrument in the world is the trumpet; I don’t play it, I only pretend that I do when I’m alone. Its power and spontaneity get to my heart every time I listen to it; especially when Lee Morgan or Cat Anderson play it. I do play the guitar though and I most certainly have a lot of fun with the bongos playing over Fela, Tony Allen or over some progressive house track.
Music is important to me. It’s the most important part of my life. I sometimes wonder why I did not follow a musical path; maybe I was scared or not talented enough to compose like the greats. But when I discovered the art of writing, (I wrote a book) I felt a myriad of emotions, just as I feel when I listen to a beautiful composition… or when Bob Dylan sings.
I am a Communication Coach and VoiceOver artist. In coaching, I help people to find their voice and hone a style that allows them to communicate with people globally. In my Voiceover work, I try to use my voice predominately for start-ups and companies with a social impact. I was once told “If you have a positive voice, you are obligated to use it”. That really stuck with me. It’s extremely important to me that every thing I do has a sense of greater purpose for the individual I’m working with or the community that my clients are trying to impact. The fact that I get to have fun while doing it, well, it feels like my own “cheat-sheet” to adulting. Having lived in England, Jamaica and Spain, one thing that truly combines all the cultures I feel, is dance. I love how dance connects people regardless of background and during quarantine in particular, it has been my therapy and solice. Once upon a time, I wanted to be a politician. I decided that would be a life of less music, less laughter and very little dancing.. so here I am, pursuing projects that feed my soul (incredibly cheesy I know) and hoping to encourage others to do the same.
